Off The Rails?

By Neal Glatt

There are only three more weeks left in the first half of 2023, which means it’s a great time to reassess how far along you are in your annual goals.  Are you on track to surpass what you wanted to achieve this year?  Or has everything seemed to go off the rails?  Consider this your mid-year guide to goal resetting…

I believe the number one reason that goals aren’t achieved isn’t that people aren’t motivated, but rather that other, more pressing priorities that were unanticipated compete with our goals.  For example, it’s not difficult to make good decisions around eating healthy when we’re at home and have prepared, but when a goal of clean eating competes with going out with friends at the end of the week, it can be abandoned for more urgent needs of preserving relationships and reducing stress.

To reframe your 2023 goals, we need to understand all of the potentially competing priorities that can interfere with them.  Gallup has identified five interconnected areas of well-being that can help with this process:

Career - Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals.

Social - Having supportive relationships and love in your life.

Financial - Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security.

Community - Liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community.

Physical - Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily.

Goals are achieved when they inclusively address all five areas.  When I coach salespeople, I force them to set sales goals that not only include revenue, but time spent at work achieving them.  This reframes a goal to include not only results, but efficiency to allow wellbeing in the other areas of life.

The process of goal setting and goal achieving never ends, but it isn’t easy.  To help, I’ve created a course that will walk you through setting great goals step-by-step which you can check out at this link.  In fact, goals are so important to me that I’m happy to offer you a free month of access to this and every course on GrowTheBench.com through our Monthly All-Access Pass.  Simply click here to add the pass to your cart and use code Goals at checkout to start achieving your next level of success.
